This year, we have covered several different topics of human nature and society. I think that my favorite of all the different genres that we have covered would have to be the plays of the absurd and the existentialist. In Waiting For Godot, we discussed the idea of life being meaningless and devoid of all purpose, other than to be here. This view of life as Vladimir and Estragon percieve is, as some people feel, pessimistic, but to me, it seems quite joyous. As far as life goes, I feel that we should live for today, and tomorrow, live for what is here and now. It would be nice if I had a "purpose" in life, but as far as that goes, I have time for that later. Waiting for Godot is a bit pessimistic, though, because the two have wasted fifty years searching for thier purpose, waiting for Mr. Godot, while they could have been off doing God knows what.
The Stranger is another play that I feel is seen as less than optimistic. Monsieur Mersault leads a life that is pretty satisfying. He has enough time to relax, swim with a beautiful woman, smoke and look around out of his window, whatever he pleases. Just because he doesn't necessarily "love" Marie doesn't mean that he couldnt have a normal life. The Stranger is a life of "meaninglessness" but also, I feel that it is a passive life, so, playing devils advocate, it could mean that he has no concept of striving for excellence, or even mediocrity.
